general direction of the Probation Director, supervises the
Probation Officers and general operations of the Probation
Department. Monitors the supervision of the Probation Officers’
caseloads and ensures the Department operates in compliance with
applicable Court policies, directives, statutes, and Michigan Court

10, 2026 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Probation Supervisor A GAA
Bargaining Unit Position REPORTS TO: Probation Director GENERAL
SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Probation Director,
supervises the Probation Officers and general operations of the
Probation Department. Monitors the supervision of the Probation
Officers’ caseloads and ensures the Department operates in
compliance with applicable Court policies, directives, statutes and
Michigan Court Rules. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 1.
Oversees the daily operations of the Probation Department.
Supervises Probation Officers and other assigned staff. Monitors
employee compliance with Court policies and directives. 2.
Responsible for new employee orientation, training, counseling,
performance evaluations and disciplinary action. 3. Plans and
implements training of probation practices in accordance with local
and state laws. 4. Coordinates Probation functions, including but
not limited to, establishing work schedules, assigning duties and
responsibilities, determining priorities, assigning, directing and
monitoring the work of the Probation Officers and their caseload,
and providing technical assistance relating to established or new
workflow, processes and procedures. 5. Investigates, resolves and
responds to inquiries or complaints from employees, judges,
attorneys, the public, probationers, law enforcement agencies,
community partners and other justice system partners concerning the
Probation Officers. Assists Managers in other Divisions/Departments
in resolving issues relating to the Probation Officers or workflow.
6. Assists the Director in developing, revising, evaluating and
implementing strategic plans and establishing goals relating to
Department improvements as assigned. Reviews and evaluates
Department procedures, guidelines and policies making
recommendations for modifications as necessary. 7. Develops,
prepares, and produces a variety of reports including but not
limited to the Department, performance, caseload, and compliance
rates to the Probation Director or others as directed. 8. Serves as
the Department’s representative on various task forces, committees,
and community programs as assigned by the Probation Director. 9.
Assists with testing lab operations as needed or at the discretion
of the Probation Director. 10. Performs other duties as assigned.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATION OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must obtain
LEIN certification and certification as the Terminal Agency
Coordinator (TAC) for the Department within 30 days of hiring. 2.
Obtains and maintains all required state licenses and
certifications necessary to perform the functions of a Probation
Officer. JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 1. The job requires the completion of
a bachelor’s degree with coursework in criminal justice, social
work, psychology or related field. 2. At least 5 years of
progressively more responsible work experience in criminal justice
and/or social work and probationary practices. 3. Supervisory and
leadership skills necessary to effectively manage the daily
operations and provide guidance to staff of assigned functions. 4.
Ability to perform duties with a high degree of independence,
initiative and judgment. Exceptional organizational skills with
attention to detail. 5. Proficient typing, word processing and
computer skills necessary to effectively utilize software and
spreadsheet applications for data entry and the creation and
compilation of various documents, communications and reports. 6.
Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to provide
accurate, timely information and communicate effectively,
competently and professionally, both orally and in writing, with
Court personnel, Judges, justice system partners, and members of
the public. 7. Mental ability to frequently handle pressures
related to dealing with distracting influences such as people,
phone calls and noise and pressures related to meeting deadlines,
fulfilling scheduling requirements and the simultaneous handling of
multiple projects requiring concentration and attention to detail.
8. Physical ability to frequently sit, stand or walk for extended
periods of time, perform repetitive movements and work in confined
areas. Required to work at remote locations outside the court
building, as necessary. Travels to remote work locations outside
the court building by foot or other transportation. WORKING
CONDITIONS: 1. Normal office environment with little discomfort due
to heat, dust, noise and the like. 2. Extended workday beyond 7.5
hours a day. Evenings, weekends and holidays may occasionally be
required, as scheduled, and with or without notice, based on the
needs of the Court. 3. Field work may be required. PHYSICAL
CHARACTERISTICS: 1. Strength, dexterity, coordination and vision to
use a keyboard and video display terminal on a daily basis. Hearing
to communicate with the public and court staff. Dexterity and
coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper. Occasional
lifting of objects weighing up to fifteen (15) pounds such as
files, stacks of paper, reference and other materials. Moving from
place to place within an office. Some reaching for items above and
below desk level. 2. Physical ability to frequently sit, walk, or
stand for extended periods of time, and to perform repetitive
